Xbox is officially retiring its long-standing Xbox Avatar Editor on January 9, 2025, marking the end of an era for the beloved customization feature. First introduced during the Xbox 360 era, Avatars allowed players to design custom characters that represented them in online interactions. These digital personas have endured through three console generations, with Xbox 360 customizations still accessible on the Xbox Series X/S. However, Microsoft has decided to discontinue the editor due to "low engagement," signaling a shift in focus toward other projects.
As reported by Pure Xbox, players will no longer be able to view or edit their existing Avatars after the shutdown date. Any cosmetic items purchased between November 2023 and January 9, 2025, will be refunded, provided players have a valid payment method on file. Despite the discontinuation, there’s good news: Xbox Original Avatars, a recreation of the original Xbox 360 editor, will remain available indefinitely. This version allows users to create and modify Avatars on Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, and Windows PCs, though with more limited customization options.

Originally launched to rival Nintendo's Miis, Xbox Avatars offered greater personalization and became a unique aspect of the Xbox ecosystem. They weren’t just static representations—Avatars were featured in free games like Doritos Crash Course and Avatar Drop, where players could directly control their custom characters.
