A simple mistake that left tiny dots on a germanium wafer with evaporated metal films led to an unexpected discovery—intricate spiral patterns etched onto the semiconductor’s surface by a chemical reaction. Further investigation revealed that these patterns emerge from chemical reactions coupled with mechanical forces, influenced by the deformation of a catalyzing agent. This breakthrough marks the first major advance in experimental methods for studying chemical pattern formation since the 1950s and could help scientists understand natural processes ranging from material fractures to the effects of stress on biological growth.
From Dots to Spirals: A Chance Observation
UCLA doctoral student Yilin Wong first noticed the unusual dots on a sample that had been left out overnight. The sample consisted of a germanium wafer coated with evaporated metal films and exposed to a drop of water. Out of curiosity, she examined the dots under a microscope and was astonished to find beautiful, intricate spiral patterns etched into the germanium surface.
Driven by curiosity, Wong conducted further experiments and discovered something remarkable—hundreds of nearly identical spiral patterns could spontaneously form on a centimeter-sized germanium chip. Even small variations in experimental parameters, such as metal film thickness, produced different patterns, including Archimedean spirals, logarithmic spirals, lotus flower shapes, and radially symmetric designs.
The discovery, published in Physical Review Materials, happened entirely by accident while Wong was attempting to bind DNA to a metal film.
"I was trying to develop a measurement technique to categorize biomolecules on a surface through breaking and reforming chemical bonds," Wong explained. "Fixing DNA molecules on a solid substrate is pretty common. I guess nobody who made the same mistake I did happened to look under the microscope."
Investigating the Chemical Mechanism
To understand how the patterns formed, Wong and co-author Giovanni Zocchi, a UCLA physics professor, systematically analyzed the process. Their experiments involved evaporating a 10-nanometer-thick layer of chromium onto a germanium wafer, followed by a 4-nanometer layer of gold. They then applied a mild etching solution, allowing it to sit overnight before washing and re-incubating the chip in a controlled wet chamber.

"The system essentially forms an electrolytic capacitor," Zocchi explained.
Over 24 to 48 hours, a chemical reaction catalyzed by the metal film etched the stunning patterns onto the germanium surface. Further investigation showed that the chromium and gold films were under stress and began to delaminate from the germanium as the catalytic reaction progressed. The resulting stress created wrinkles in the metal film, which—when exposed to further catalysis—generated the striking spiral patterns observed under the microscope.
